ELLA STANFORD

Originating from West Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand, I ventured down to Wellington in 2017 and began my Bachelors of Fine Art with Honours at Massey University, it was there i began to grow as an artist and work commercially in poster design and live art. in 2019 i made the move back to my hometown in West Auckland to finish the remainder of my degree at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design.
I am currently completing a Bachelor of Naturopathic and Herbal Medicine.

I've always been infatuated by the contrast between the light and the dark.
I put trust in my subconscious as I believe it is one of the most powerful and pure things about being human, lying somewhere between the conscious and unconscious, acting as an alternate store house of information, emotional experiences and major premise.

Most of my artistic practice is based around the merging of these two concepts and the application of them onto a desired topic question. This helps me to better understand my interests and to see how deep it will lead me, I show this through many things, through my use of colour, application, texture, ink illustration, and pen markings. It’s hard to isolate and categorise elements of my work without context as I feel I am missing so much of what is needed to be said, but without saying too much, making art helps me to understand this experience we are having, it helps me to externalise much of what is kept internal, I rely on my subconscious to show me what my reality really is.

My two main practices are Illustration and Abstract Painting. I often use Illustration as a means to deeper under- stand my emotions and reasoning behind my conscious motives, they are painstakingly meticulous in nature. My approach to Abstract painting is entirely subconscious, they are vibrant and free from any predeterminations.
